BLUE DEAL: the route to Blue Energy deployment in the Mediterranean area

18th May 2022

Sala Ragazzini, Ravenna (Italy)

In the transition to renewable energy, can we afford to leave the sea out? If we are serious about making this change, the answer is no. This, however, raises further questions including: Which is the optimal route to support the deployment of BLUE ENERGY in the Mediterranean Area? How do we involve interested parties through a participatory process?

Nowadays, marine energy sources give a profitable opportunity to generate renewable energy, and this also concerns the Mediterranean Sea, besides oceans.

For the past 32 months, 12 Partners from 6 Mediterranean countries, under the coordination of the Ecodynamics group of the University of Siena, have been collaborating to provide answers to these questions and design the tools needed to support the inclusion of BLUE ENERGY in the energy and maritime plans of Mediterranean states.

The guiding principle of all the activities implemented by BLUE DEAL can be distilled into one concept: participative process. Under this principle, the BLUE DEAL partnership has conducted 5 BLUE DEAL Labs, 2 Business Forums, 1 Open Innovation Action, 1 School Contest, 1 survey campaign with citizens, and 9 Open days which have engaged policy makers, SMEs, innovators, students, and the general public.

The outcome of all these activities has been the creation of 9 Regional Alliances and 1 Transnational Alliance, which provide a space in which the demand and solution to BLUE ENERGY can meet in the design of the future of the MED Area. A BLUE future!

Join us at the final conference to discover more about the BLUE DEAL project!

Let’s make a BLUE DEAL!
